World War II was the most widespread and the most destructive war in history. It lasted from 1939 to 1945 and eventually involved all the great powers and most of the smaller nations of the world. Even the countries that remained neutral felt the war’s impact. The chief antagonists were Germany, Italy, and Japan (known as the Axis powers) on one side and the United States, Great Britain, The Soviet Union, France, and China (known as the Allies) on the other. The battle field of the war stretched from Europe to north Africa and from the island of the Pasific to eastern and southern.
